Iron Age, mid-2nd century BC One of the earliest coins in Britain Iron Age, mid-2nd century BC One of the earliest coins in Britain This is a superb example of the Iron Age die-engraver's art. It also represents what is thought to be the first type of coin ever to circulate in Britain. They were probably made on the Continent in northern France or Belgium. Gold coins like this crossed over the English Channel, perhaps in trade or as gifts between high-ranking individuals. Some of them were eventually buried in coin hoards and not recovered by their owners. The owner may have died, or simply forgotten where they had put them. Alternatively, the coins may have been intended as permanent, sacred offerings to the gods. They are mostly found today by metal-detectorists, in locations throughout south-east England. Another one was found at Fenny Stratford near Milton Keynes. The design of the coin is, at several stages removed, descended from the Greek gold staters of King Philip II of Macedon (reigned 359-336 BC). The hair on the left-facing head has grown considerably, while the original two-horsed chariot on the reverse of the coin has been transformed here into a lively, abstract depiction of a horse surrounded by a large array of symbols. c20-25AD Cunobelin silver unit The Cunobelin silver is very nice, and a rare type at that. Seated figure facing left. The only standard reference for the type is no. 308 in Spink's Coins of England, it's not in Van Arsdell or the BM catalogue. You can see the amphora which the seated figure is holding quite clearly, but the CVNOBE doesn't show up too well on either. I don't have the exact figures here for rarity, but I don't think there are more than a dozen of these recorded at most. Date is perhaps somewhere in the middle of Cunobelin's reign, say perhaps c. 20-25 AD. 13.97mm,1.27g |

Roman Crispvs bronze sent for ID This one is a fairly early centenionalis (the Æ3 denomination Constantine I created to replace the sadly diminished follis). I can’t tell the mint, but generally the material you find tends to be from European rather than eastern mints. In fact, this type was struck only at the 3 most western mints so you have a fairly short list of possibilities – London, Lyon & Trier. This one has a left-facing bust where yours faces right, otherwise they are the same “BEATA TRAN-QVILLITAS” reverse type: 3 stars above Globus Terrarum atop small, square altar inscribed “VOT / IS / XX” in three lines; PTR(dot) in exergue (this one’s from Trier – yours may be too, but there is no way I can tell from the photos.) 'A badge for a Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in bronze and dating somewhere around C13/14th possibly very slightly later . This is a very scarce item and it relates to The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem being a Catholic chivalric order of Knighthood that traces its roots to Godfrey of Bouillon, principal leader of the First Crusade. According to reliable sources in the Vatican and Jerusalem, it began in historical reality as a mixed clerical and lay confraternity (association) of pilgrims which gradually grew around the most central of the Christian holy places in the Middle East, the Holy Sepulchre or the tomb of Jesus Christ. This would have been a pin for a member of the order , there is a mark on the reverse where the original pin would have been fixed '

Large Roman bronze coin sent for ID Nice one – that’s a Nero large-module copper As, with “Apollo” (Nero as Apollo) strolling right and playing a lyre on the reverse. Nero had a similar small-module As in brass, with the same Apollo reverse. There might be more than one obverse legend associated with this reverse (there may be reverse legend variants as well - and the obverse legend is none too clear in the photo - but the reverse would quite likely be: The obverse legend might well be: “NERO CLAVD CAESAR GERMANICVS IMP P P” Nero used a gazillion different legends on his Æ, the page(s) with his Æ legend variants in RIC runs to about 85 separate entries, which is why I’m not committing myself to the readings I’m suggesting above. The type I describe above dates to 65 AD. And was struck at the mint in Lyon. Mark |

These model coins were issued by Joseph Moore between 1844 and 1848, when the Government was tentatively discussing plans to replace the heavy copper coinage then in circulation. They were produced in such large numbers, and became so popular with the public, that the Royal Mint had to make an official pronouncement stating that they were not responsible for their manufacture.

Victoria IHS badge IHS: dating from the 8th c., this is an abbreviation for "IHESUS," the way Christ's Name was spelled in the Middle Ages (despite popular belief, the monogram stands neither for "Iesus Hominum Salvator" --"Jesus Saviour of Men" -- nor for "In His Service.") Popularized by St. Bernardine of Siena, the monogram was later used by St. Ignatius of Loyola as a symbol for the Jesuit Order. The IHS monogram is an abbreviation or shortening of Jesus' name in Greek to the first three letters. Thus ΙΗΣΟΥΣ, ιησυς (iēsus, "Jesus"), is shortened to ΙΗΣ (iota-eta-sigma), sometimes transliterated into Latin or English characters as IHS or ΙΗC. The symbol is said to appear rarely in the catacombs, only in the catacomb of Priscilla and the atrium of the Capella Grca (Greek Chapel).1 It was popularized in the fifteenth century, however, by Franciscan disciple Bernadine of Sienna as a symbol of peace. In 1541 St. Ignatius Loyola adopted the symbol with three nails below and surrounded by the sun as the seal of the Jesuit order. Contrary to some authors, the monogram originally stood for neither for Iesus Hominum Salvator ("Jesus Savior of Men") nor for "In His Service." Some attribute its origin to Constantine's vision, where he saw a cross with the inscription "In hoc signo vinces" ("in this sign you shall conquer,"2 which is abbreviated, according to them, as IHS. However, this seems to require a stretch, as do claims that it is really a pagan symbol. The simplest explanation, as an abbreviation of Jesus' name, is best.

Roman bronze coin -sent for ID This one’s in pretty tough shape for getting really specific about the ID, I’m afraid. It appears to be a late 1st tetrarchy (or early 2nd tetrarchy) billon follis. I think I see “GAL…” as the beginning of the obverse legend, so it most likely would be Galerius as Caesar or possibly as Augustus, or possibly Maximinus II as Caesar. The reverse appears to be the typical ‘GENIO POPVLI ROMANI’ type which is overwhelmingly found on the earlier folles – Genius of the Roman People standing left holding a patera over a small altar and a cornucopiae. I don’t think there’s any realistic chance of determining the mint of origin – it’s in approximately the 300-310 AD time-frame. Mark |
