Georgian pipe tamper Venus figurine PIPE TAMPER A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy tobacco pipe tamper (c. 1800-c. 1900). This tamper is in the form of a naked female (Venus) standing in a classical pose. One hand is resting on the left hip and the other is raised above the head holding a vessel from which water pours. The face is glancing upwards to the left and the facial features are not well defined. On the back of the figure, wavering lines running vertically may represent flowing hair or water being poured from the vessel in the hand. The breasts are small and the female genitals are apparent. The feet rest upon a turned base in the form of a column which is flat on the underside. |

c100 BC Roman Republican silver coin - sent for provisional ID but needs a good 'cook' to remove crust I’m afraid I can add almost nothing to my earlier comments. The photo wasn’t particularly “tweakable” for detail. It’s definitely Republican, probably relatively early and very possibly anonymous. Until you cook a bit of the crud off and we can see if there is any lettering beneath the quadriga and/or the circumference of the obverse, it’s probably safe to call it “Republican denarius, probably anonymous, ca. 150-100 B.C.” – this time-frame estimate is rather more what we call a “WAG” on this side of the briny. If cleaning reveals any letters, monograms or privy controls it will be with a lot more confidence that I could place it any closer in time, etc. than I can from these first photos.
