Very unusual Roman bronze coin - sent off for ID

You seem to have a concentric legend around a wreath with a device or characters in the middle on this coin’s reverse. I suspect you have one of the “wreath vota” centenionales which were common in the early 320’s. Depending on whom each was minted for, they had reverse legends like D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG, D N LICINI AVGVSTI,  or CAESARVM NOSTRORVM around, and VOT / XX (or V or X or XV or XXX) in two lines within the wreath. They were struck for all the children of Constantine as Caesars, the two Licinii, (and Constantine, of course.)

Beyond that guess, I’m afraid I can’t tell you much more. I’m thinking the “snowflake” like device on the obverse looks like a countermark – nothing like that was ever on the obverse of a wreath vota centenionalis otherwise.

This is North 363, which is reasonably common as a find - 20 coins in EMC.

Rory Naismith's book The Coinage of Southern England 796-865 lists 24 coins of the East Anglian moneyer Lul in this type (Naismith E10.2 = North 363), to which can be added 8 coins in EMC found since the book was published, including this new find.

This is a vota-type reverse in honor of Constantine Jr’s decennalia – announcing his celebration of ten years ruling as Caesar. He performs certain ceremonial duties and sacrifices in the state religion, and pledges to do well in the hope of 10 more years.
If you can dust off the exergual area a bit (maybe a toothbrush, nothing radical), it appears that the letters for the mint mark are there, just obscured by dirt. If I could read it, I could give you more details, but the references for this period all break out the coinage by mint first, then by denomination/metal, then by type, and finally, by the person or persons for whom it was struck plus bust style and other minutiae.
Generally, the centenionales of this approximate era which you seem to find most often tend all to be products of western mints like Lyon, Trier and Arles, but without knowing the mint, it’s not possible to give you a more detailed description & ID than the generic reference in a 35 year old book of generalities.

This is what many call a “barbarous radiate”. An unfortunate misnomer since 95% of people hearing it have immediate visions of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian – “Oh wow, a barbarian coin!”
Hard to be farther from the truth. I call them “contemporary copies” which may not trip off the tongue as smoothly as “barbarous radiate”, but is far closer to what they actually were. Actual barbarians had little use for base-metal token coins.
The people who conceived of, made and used these coins (very common in some places and times) were no more “barbarians” than any other citizens of the Roman Empire. Coins of this nature generally were created at least semi-officially with the approval (or a wink from) the local powers that be. Since the dies for these were mostly created by local smiths or jewelers, they tend to be anywhere from nearly indistinguishable from the originals to very much cruder than their prototypes. They are found in the same hoards as officially produced pieces so they obviously circulated side-by-side with official currency – perhaps at a discount? We just don’t know. These were generally stopgap supplies of coin to keep local trade and mercantilism going when supplies of official coin “dried up” (remember, all domestic, daily transactions were typically done with coins and the sort of “credit” as we know it really was not available to the common man – only the very rich could work on credit. A good supply of coin was an absolute necessity for trade at this time.) Both the mid 3rd century “emergency” coinages like this and those which copy the later, 4th century, “Constantinian” types are fairly common in Britain. The withdrawal of Roman administration from Britain in the 5th century saw a lot of local, semi-official copies made of familiar types of Roman coins.
Some are nearly indistinguishable from their officially produced prototypes.
This, I believe, was copied from a posthumous antoninianus of Claudius II, “Gothicus”. There were two major types, one with a paneled altar on the reverse and one with an eagle. Unfortunately my website was trashed recently so at the moment I don’t have the same instant access to photos of examples in my collections.
Here is a listing from an on-line catalog which illustrates the type from which I believe this to be copied – this takes some guesswork because the legends are completely illegible on yours, and seldom were completely literal in their legend transcription by generally illiterate die engravers to be used by a primarily illiterate public.

Typically copper, bronze, potin, or whatever alloy was available – almost never as good “silver” or billon as the originals. This one is better than most unofficial pieces. It is also likely a little smaller than the normal, official issue pieces, too, but I made the photos the same size for comparison’s sake. Ranging through levels of illiteracy many of these have had their legends reduced to abstract, decorative border elements.
I think you sent me photos of another piece in the last couple of days (after the Constantine II Vota I wrote up for you and before this one) – I’ll have a look through the last few days’ emails and will send you an ID/writeup if I find it.

This appears to be an antoninianus of Tetricus II, Gallic Empire co-ruler with his father, 273-274 AD.
You have the radiate, beardless bust right on obverse.
On the reverse, well, yeah, sort of a bottle. It’s a flagon as a piece of the sacred implementia of the state religion.
Yours may be a contemporary copy – the coins of the Tetrici were often copied – a fully official specimen looks like this:

'A badge for a Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in bronze and dating somewhere around C13/14th possibly very slightly later . This is a very scarce item and it relates to The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem being a Catholic chivalric order of Knighthood that traces its roots to Godfrey of Bouillon, principal leader of the First Crusade. According to reliable sources in the Vatican and Jerusalem, it began in historical reality as a mixed clerical and lay confraternity (association) of pilgrims which gradually grew around the most central of the Christian holy places in the Middle East, the Holy Sepulchre or the tomb of Jesus Christ.This would have been a pin for a member of the order , there is a mark on the reverse where the original pin would have been fixed '
